Keep Your Eyes Healthy With These Three Tips

There’s a lot your doctor wants you to do to stay in good health. You have to be mindful of your diet and you have to get plenty of exercise. What about your eye doctor?

If you’re like many people, it has probably been a while since you’ve visited your optometrist, but there are some things eye health professionals want you to do to keep your eyes healthy. You’ll be glad you did, because following these tips will allow you to see your absolute best for many years to come.

Wear Sunglasses

Getting stuck outside without a pair of sunglasses can be a nuisance, especially if you’re trying to drive with squinted eyes. But, it’s not just annoying—it can damage your eyes.

Too much exposure to direct sunlight increases your chances of developing cataracts and experiencing macular degeneration.

When looking for a pair of sunglasses, choose a pair that provides at least 99 percent UVA and UVB protection. Wraparound lenses will make sure sunlight doesn’t sneak in around the rims. These features are especially important when looking for men’s sports glasses because athletes are exposed to a lot of direct sunlight.

Consider Your Eye Health When Using Technology

It’s important to protect your eyes when you’re outside, but you may be doing plenty to damage your eyes indoors without even knowing it.

Computer vision syndrome is real, and it’s not just adults that are suffering from this affliction. Children are spending more time in front of a screen than ever before. Symptoms include blurred vision, headaches, and neck pain.

That doesn’t necessarily mean you have to shut down your computer for good. There are a few things you can do to reduce your chances of developing screen related eye problems:

  • Adjust your screen so your eyes are level with the top of the monitor. Looking slightly down at the screen can reduce eye strain.
  • Avoid glare from windows and lights, or use a glare-screen on your computer.
  • If your eyes feel tired or dry, take a short break. At least once every 20 minutes, look 20 feet away for 20 seconds.

Visit Your Eye Doctor Annually

No matter how much time and attention you spend taking care of your eyes, things happen, especially as we age. Even if you have 20/20 vision, you should still schedule annual appointments with an eye doctor.

You can develop many eye issues that are more easily taken care of when caught early. Just a few medical conditions an eye doctor can identify include:

  • High blood pressure
  • Melanoma
  • Diabetes
  • Autoimmune disease
  • Allergies
  • And more

And of course, your eye doctor can identify cataracts, and they can help you manage the symptoms that are associated with computer vision syndrome.

It’s easy to forget about your eyes when they’re in tip-top shape, but it’s the best time to consider your eye health. It’s a lot easier to prevent problems from occurring in the first place than it is to realize there’s a problem when it’s a little too late.
